Discover the rich history, resilience and cultural heritage of the Krio people of Sierra Leone – a community whose story continues to inspire generations around the world.
The Krio people of Sierra Leone are the descendants of formerly enslaved Africans, liberated Africans and free people of African descent who came together in Freetown, Sierra Leone, between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. From diverse backgrounds and shared experiences, they forged a unique identity rooted in resilience, faith, education and community.
United by a common spirit and a rich cultural heritage, the Krios developed the Krio language, which today serves as one of Sierra Leone’s most widely spoken languages and a symbol of national unity.
The Krio story is one of triumph over adversity – a story of people who transformed hardship into hope and built a legacy that continues to inspire generations around the world.
Today, that legacy lives on through the preservation of our culture, the strength of our communities and our commitment to future generations.
